The anti-democracy anti-Republican

I don’t care about Donald Trump. He has been and always will be a mentally-ill clown who spies on naked teenagers in their changing rooms.

The person who has done more lasting damage to the American Republic — and ironically calls himself a “Republican” — is Mitch McConnell.

His actions risk turning the world’s oldest living democracy that has been guided by a respect for the rule of law into an unstable banana republic cursed by sporadic armed conflict where the only rule is that might makes right.

Our enviable system of government has given us 244 years stability and internal peace and prosperity — broken only once during the Civil War. Instead of standing up to protect the peaceful transfer of power that has formed the bedrock of our democracy, McConnell has chosen to remain silent as our outgoing president undermines our most sacred institution, the electoral system.

Numerous sources, including those in Trump’s own administration, have reported no evidence of any fraud.

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure security division of the Department of Homeland Security even launched a “rumor control” website to offset “Mis- and Disinformation [that] can undermine public confidence in the electoral process, as well as in our democracy.”

Yet McConnell continues to allow Trump to sow doubts and division that will delegitimize a duly-elected President in the eyes of almost half the electorate. This is extremely dangerous. The last time half the population denied the legitimacy of our government, more Americans died than in any other war in American history.

McConnell uses the power of his position (which includes funneling campaign funding; allocating chairmanships, committee assignments, bill introductions, and media opportunities; and backing primary challenges) to ensure his lackeys fall in line to prevent the smooth transition of power. This can have deadly consequences when it comes to being prepared to handle the deadly pandemic or counter potential terrorist attacks.

I am 100% in favor of a strong opposition party to counter the more liberal impulses of the Democratic party. But we need one that offers competing ideas, not obstruction, and is willing to work WITH the incoming administration to address the major challenges of our time. Because it’s not just about the transition. When then-Vice President Biden tried to explain how a particular bill would help American families, McConnell reportedly responded:

“You must be under the mistaken impression that I care.”

He has repeated his vow to obstruct whatever a Democratic president might try to accomplish and has said that his number one priority was (and is) to make sure that any democratic president only serves one term.

As Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell has violated his oath to protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States. For what? Power? Personal enrichment through corruption?

As a result, I call on the Senate Republicans to replace Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader with someone thoughtful and honest like Mitt Romney or even Rob Portman or John Thune. Someone who can provide a true counterweight to the progressive influence within the Democratic party and propose ideas that make America work for all Americans.
